Friulano: Friuli's Charm and Versatility

Friulano grapes originated from the area of Friuli Venezia Giulia, it is one of the 20 regions located in the northeastern of Italy. Bordering Austria to the north and Slovenia to the east, the region has an approximate area of 3,030 square miles, comprising of 4 different provinces, nestled between sea and mountains.

History states that the name Friuli Venezia Giulia, the location where the Friulano grapes are from is a combination of the Friuli and Venezia Giulia during the 19th Century. The name might sound odd to some, but the centuries of history, conflicts and conquest that ultimately constructed this symbolic region is much more complex.

The unique terroir of the area which consists of the combination of fertile rich soil and luscious climate has resulted in a remarkable aromatic legacy and a excellent grounds for the Friulano grapes and Friulano grape vines to be bred and produced.

Similar to the Friulano grape variety, the flag of Friuli carries a history that traces back to centuries. The flag of Friuli is a historical flag of the traditional Italian region of Friuli that traces back to the 14th Century. The Friulian flag first came to be in 1334, making it the seventh oldest flag in Europe.

Traditionally, the flag was flown and used in contests, competitions that occurred it in state of Friuli, it was also painted on walls and buildings to signify its location. Some say the symbol of the flag comes from the name of Aquileia, which following a popular legend comes from the term “La Aquila” (An Eagle), who showed the first citizens the place where the city was founded.

Today, aside from Friulano wines, the Friulian flag can be seen in many places around the Friuli Venezia Giulia area, especially on 03 April annually, which celebrates the “Fieste de Patrie dal Friûl” (Celebration of the Friulian Homeland), this marks the occasion where the members of the community and many public display the Friulian flag

Friulano grapes is believed to have originated in the Friuli region of Italy. It was documented as early as the 12th century and has had a long history in the region. DNA testing were conducted before and has shown that the Friulano grape to be the similar to the Sauvignonasse, a varietal that is native to France and the Gironde.

Despite this finding, Friulano is considered to be a flagship and a traditional grape variety of Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Friulano grapes is currently the third most planted varietal and the wines are popular locally and beginning to gain traction in International markets.

To the common eye, the Friulano grapes is often mistaken for Sauvignon Blanc due to the leaves and berry being very similar despite their characteristics being different. The Friulano grapes ripens early but buds late, and it is productive to the point the yields must be monitored to maintain its quality.

Friulano grapes typically has aromas of wild meadow flowers, almond blossom and ripe white fruits are followed by flavors of pear, peach and tropical fruits, with some citrus notes, a touch of honey and a very typical almond finish. It can also display mineral notes, as well as nutty elements, herbs and spices.

Due to its light and refreshing nature, Friulano wines are an excellent Aperitif. Besides, its light body and good minerality makes it also perfect to be paired with Appetizers, Vegetables, Fish, Chicken and other white meat choices.
