Italy being a land steeped in winemaking tradition, history and craft has in its recent times been embracing a greener more sustainable approach towards the production of Italian wines. Also known as ‘Vini Biologico’ in Italian or just ‘Organic Wines’, demands for these Italian wines have been flourishing globally. In this article, we’ll discuss the Italian Organic Wine that are sustainable, and its future to the wine industry.
What is Organic Wine?
Organic Wine in the simplest explanation is wines made from grapes grown according to organic farming practices. This translates to a resounding “no” to synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers in the vineyard. Instead, organic farmers rely on natural methods to nurture their vines and promote a healthy ecosystem.
Organic viticulture is more than just the absence of harmful chemicals. It’s a philosophy that fosters balance in the vineyard. Practices like composting to enrich the soil, planting cover crops to attract beneficial insects, and using natural pest control methods become essential tools. This holistic approach promotes biodiversity, protects the environment, and allows the unique character of the grapes to flourish better.
How to be certified as an Organic Wine?
The world of organic wines is booming, but ensuring authenticity requires a rigorous process. As Italy is part of the European Union (EU) since January 1958, when the EU Organic Standards was introduced in 1991, Italy was also part of the agreement.
These comprehensive standards outline the specific practices that must be followed throughout the winemaking process, from grape cultivation to bottling. In order for an Italian Wine to be certified, the winery must demonstrate a multi-year plan for organic grape growing. This plan typically spans three years and details how they will transition their vineyards to meet organic standards.
Besides eliminating the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, organic methods for nurturing soil health is paramount as well. Upon verification and inspection by independent authorized bodies ensuring that the wineries adheres to the standards set within, the winery and the specific wine is given the ‘Green Stamp of Approval’.
The Green Stamp of Approval
Once a winery and its wine successfully completes the certification process to be an Organic Wine, they are entitled to display the EU organic logo on their wine labels. The green emblem with a leaf signifies that the wine has been produced according to stringent organic regulations, ensuring that the wine you’re enjoying has been produced with a commitment to environmental responsibility.
Benefits of Organic Wine
Its a Italian wine lovers dilemma! Traditional or Organic Wine? What’s the difference? While both of the Italian Wines offer delicious options and great varieties, understanding the benefits of Organic Wine can help to make the best informed choices.
Selecting an Organic Wine can be said to be more environmentally friendly, organic viticulture prioritizes sustainable practices, which reduced their environmental impact, protecting the soil of the vineyards. Besides, Organic Wine can be said to may contain lower levels of sulfites in the wine due to the focus on the natural methods used to preserve the wines.
